Note : Lewis Hoad's first voyage was on the JANE HOAD in May 1868 on a voyage to Madeira and the West Indies, returning to London in September, 1868.

He was at sea 60 years of his life.  He was 2nd Officer of the Cable Ship CALABRIA in June 1896 and after working through the various grades in the SEINE, SCOTIA and BRITANIA; he was appointed Master of the Cable Ship SEINE in June 1904; then Navigator of the cable ship COLONIA from that year until 1909.  On the building of the TELCONIA, in 1909, he was appointed her Captain, which he held until his death, in 1926.

He was awarded an O.B.E. (Order of the British Empire) for his service during the 1st world war in the Danger Zone while in command of the TELCONIA.  During the first few days of the 1st world war, the TELCONIA cut the lines of communication (sea links) from Germany, cutting them off from countries including the US.  Which gave Britain an advantage in terms of PR.

The Prime Minister of the time was quoted as saying "Sea sense was woven into his life. The building, the manning, and the sailing of ships, for that he was known, and that he lived." shortly after his death.
